Finding this weird and totally unexpected hobby has had many purposes. Namely, I've been able to recycle stuff that would have otherwise been trashed and express myself artistically a bit (something I didn't even know I'd enjoy). I would also like this to contribute a little to my life and others' lives, though. I'm not delusional, folks. I know making vintage button bracelets won't put food on my table or save the world but it's probably doable to cover a few date nights or even a plane ticket home each year. And why not share the love by giving $3 of every item sold to a good cause? It makes transactions into more than the typical consumerism and it really does add up.
There are a ton of organizations doing amazing things so it's tough to pick a direction, but too many charities is a pretty good thing to be overwhelmed by. I basically spun the wheel (translation: googled some stuff) and landed on one:
Compassion International
Mainly, they feature a monthly child/family sponsorship program but have tentacles in other directions as well (assistance to impoverished countries for AIDS, Malaria, disaster relief, medical assistance, education programs, etc.). Compassion consistently receives high ratings for financial accountability and integrity. And it's all done in the name of Jesus Christ, which I unashamedly support. I love that they focus so much on children, too. At least 80% of all expenditures are used on programs serving kids (by far the cutest and most vulnerable portion of the world's population).
There ya go. That's this years donation recipient, so now you know who you'll be helping when you buy some Greenbling.
That's awesome! We used to sponsor a child through Compassion. :)
